Art is part of our culture
There are many skilled craftmen, handicrafts, and painters in Sisimiut. Particularly since 1976 there has been an active artistic life in Sisimiut not least as a consequence of the handicraft courses taught at The Knud Rasmussen Folk High School. Hereby many adolescents as well as more mature people from all over the coast are given the opportunity of developing their handicraft and most of them can thus supplement their daily income. Handicraftsmen and other artists from the coast gather and are inspired in their handicraft and art.
In resent years, the Home Rule government became aware that the conditions for craftsmen, artisans, and painters and tremendous improvements have been made concerning equipment and tools so that they dispose of expensive machinery today.
Thanks to Sisimiut’s geographical position close to the walruses area one has had excess to bone and tusks, especially earlier. On the other hand, it can be difficult to find soapstone quarry in the area ans ahus it is necessary to import the material from other towns along the coast. Sisimiut lies in the middle of the reindeer and musk oxen areas making it easy to collect antlers, horns and musk musk oxen wool from these animals.
The word in greenlandic “Eqqumiitsuliorneq” means “to create something look strange”, and every artists have their own skill by making these beautiful creatures of clothing, for decoration, jewelry, souvenirs, small equipments, which are very good idea to buy those as a gifts.
